Overcoming a Fear of Dogs
I was terrified of dogs as a child. Big or small I could see them a mile away and run for cover. To this day I have no clue as to why I had this fear. I grew up in a small southern town where everyone had a dog--a pet dog, a guard dog or a hunting dog.
Family and friends made fun of me as people so often do when they don't understand something. I felt isolated and like some sort of freak. I never knew there were other people with this horrible fear until many years later. It even has a name--cynophobia.
My sister brought a puppy home from one of her students when I was 12. It was a small mixed breed and a very lively puppy, but a great dog. I named him Yogi. He was black with white paws and we bonded. I prayed hard and willed myself to overcome this fear that was paralyzing my life. Proof that the power of prayer and a postive attitude works. Today I love dogs and only fear viscious dogs as most people do. I am a Nellie Neat Freak and won't allow a dog to live in my house but I love petting the many dogs in my neighborhood.
Anyone who has a fear of dogs should seek therapy. As with any fear you have to face it head on. Exposing yourself to a dog in a controlled situation is a common and effective therapy.
It is a real fear and difficult for most people to understand. How could anyone not love a dog? Easy, believe me! We all suffer from some sort of fear and should be sensitive to individuals who are struggling with their fears. For all of you out there who fear dogs I urge you to seek therapy. You can overcome the fear. I am living proof.
