So many of the marketing gurus talk about making zillions of dollars a month but that first bit of success you have online is the most important because it gives you hope to continue. I would be interested to know how you made your first sale online. Please share with us the product as well as what advertising methods you used. Maybe this information can help those who have not seen any success online.

By the way I posted this on the Warrior forum too. This is the premier internet marketing forum online and I highly recommend that you join and participate there as well. Here is the post there if you want to follow the discussion there as well.

How about you?

Thanks!

Hi Matt,

The first thing that I sold was a survey site which was purchased from a Clickbank Mall that I was promoting.

I can't remember how much I earned from the sale but I was highly excited that I sold something online.

The advertising method that I was using at the time was Pay-Per-Click (PPC).

Thanks for sharing Capt. Kirk! Well, you had your initial success and there is no stopping you now! The first sale I ever made was for a weight loss tea which was eventually banned then unbanned. Just a simple website with my phone number on it. Remember answering the phone? Still works actually. That makes me think I should simplify my current websites and have more ways to be contacted. It works.

My first sale was a book that I wrote called "The Work At Home eCyclopedia"

It was a 100 page eBook that took me about 3 months to put together, and the sale was for $37.

Since August 09 though, my main sales have come from the new online writing business I started. A lot has been learned from this exercise.

My first sale on the internet was cookware sets. I joined a guy that just developed a 'shopping mall' and he gave away templates to create your own mall.

This was way before eBay ..... and I just went around in my home town and gave out little business cards that all it said was "the greatest cookware value you have ever seen - check it out now" .... I recd so many orders, that I started to add other products to my site. It was fun back then -

But then someone sent me an email telling me that I could send my message out to millions of people. Which I did - and bam, that was the first time I learned about being blasted off from my ISP.

What advertising method did you use to make your first sale?

I used the brand name of the company which very few people were using. So the site got listed in the search engines and I got a few calls. I experimented with email marketing after that but that did not help with the tea sales. I guess I was using the brand hijack method with SEO.

Seems like the direct person to person selling worked the best. Yes, people tend to believe you more when they can see who you are. This is one of the reasons I have started doing videos of myself for credibility. People want to know who they are doing business with.

It was over 2 years ago and after 1 year of "no sale" that I finally had an overnight digital sale. It was from my own website but through Clickbank. The site is still live today:http://www.proofcheck.info/Squidooforprofit1022.html. I was over the moon that morning. Making money while you sleep.
Since then though there has been drought with sporadic showers on occassions - rare occassions.

Hey Matt,
My first sale was I guess blind luck, I sold 1 get google adds free just by using a bulk mailer, which I still use from time to time today. I am still learning
and will always be. That one sale seemed to make me want to keep trying.

My first sale was on E-Bay, I sold two solar stepping stones through a drop ship supplier. I made only a few dollars.

Wish I had the money to place Google adds and Pay Per Clicks. Just don't have a big budget to work with.

My first sale reminds me of when I had gone fishing as a kid. I left the line dangling and was walking around and caught a fish. My first sale was like that. I had done some advertising with this company http://bit.ly/90aCNI and got a sale due to their work on my behalf. I was busy doing other things and they caught the fish.

My first sale online was about 6yrs ago, I was a distributor for an online marketing company, My first and only order online for that company totaled about $85.00. That sale gave me hope but I quit the business after about 3 months. I had sold product to about 20% of the people in town I live in and never received a commission check. My total sales within that 3 month period was about $8000. My commission was 10% of total sales so somewhere in there I was supposed to receive $800 and never did. I quit that company but did not quit Network Marketing. That experience actually helped me tremendously. :D

I had some eBay sales, but they weren't as exciting as my first commission/affiliate
online sale which was with TMI Wireless. My sit was http://www.eblitter.com. My site sold the latest cell phones and plans. I had the site for about a year without selling anything and then I got my first online sale, $60 commission, when I posted an ad on eBay. It was exciting. In fact sales kept on pouring in at about two sales a day - until Ebay put an end to that. But your first sale, you never forget.

Mike, I think that is a great lesson in persistence. Most people would have completely given up after one year. Most give up after one day. This shows what I have always believed that persistence is the number 1 quality needed for success in internet marketing. Thanks. Matt.

My first sale was back in 2007 when i joined project payday. I made $12. It did'nt take any advertising methods, because you just complete some free offers on the site and once everything went through i'd get a hold of the person and they would deposit right into my paypal. The only downside was it would take forever to complete some offers and then i would'nt get anything. to much hassle so i continued researching for something better. Advice to all new internet marketers, take free trials that dont require credit card info. that way you have a chance to see if it is what you are looking for before you pay anything.

Hi Matt, I think that it's a great move to introduce this topic. I started affiliate marketing 2 years ago. Before that I have read tons and tons of materials how that and that made millions in a year online. But what I noticed was that many make a lot of smoke without a "Band" if you understand what I mean. They say a lot of things but at the end it amounts to saying absolutely nothing until I met a guy who told me what it is all about.

I started with 0 investment promoting male enhancement products. I mean no website except the free subdomain I got from the affiliate network. The guy (Now my best friend from obvious reasons told me not to quit if I didn't start earning immediately. It is simply not so he said. It took him nearly 4 years before earning around $15000/month) My first sale came after 4 months. A commission of $31.98. That was the sweetest commission I ever made. It gave me confidence to go on and it was worth more than a million dollars considering that I live in a country where as an Engineer I earn less that $300/month and at that time was out of ***.

I never had the guts to try PPC on warning from my friend as my earnings came from only SEO.

My first sale 'online' was through "The Spoken Network".
My novel 'The Sultry Climate' in paperback was a slow seller as I could not compete with the large publishing houses.

By creating an audio-book version and marketing through the above mentioned company, sales have been achieved worldwide.

I receive approximately 40% of sales revenue - better than 100% of nothing!
(and no postage involved).

"The Sultry Climate", by Emil Di Vago, published by MUFF DIRECT, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Still available in paperback, but much cheaper in audio-book form.

Hi Matt,
My first sale was made through PPC and was 1 month ago. I have only been in internet marketing for 5 months. It took me 2.5 months to get my website up after a Lot of video tutorials. I made 1 more sale for the same website and then had to give a refund. Now the PPC provider does not like my landing page, even though I made no changes on it. I have now made changes, and personalized the page with my picture and asked for a reconsideration, but it has not been approved yet. I have still been watching videos, and paying out money for mentoring, but no more sales. I will keep plugging along, but I am more selective on putting out money now. Doing some free advertising.
Keep up the good work.

I remember my first sale. It was 2001 and I had been working to still build up my site (still am, ha ha ha) part time then one day I got notification via email from a large business needing T1 long distance which in turn got me a $3,000.00 check up front and $150.00 a month thereafter. I have had lots of ups and downs and some months no checks at all, but I have never given up and I love the business world and have learned so much.

I think I might ad that I ran my business from the local library with NO budget and was homeless at the time. So I think that should show everyone that it is possible to do an online business part time no matter what the situation is.

Hi Matt,

My first sale online was an affiliate digital product promoted through my website in the year 2008. The sale value of that digital product was $160 and I made a commission of $80 and the sale came through one of the traffic exchanges.

Thank you,

My first sale was on E-Bay in February, 2002. I had too many comic books and was taking up too much space. Someone told me I could make some money by selling them on e-bay. My first sale was an old copy of x-men that I sold for $400. Not bad for a first sale. I was hooked, now I have a store and sell a variety of Items, I even have a website, sundreez value center. I plan to continue with the store and hope to celebrate my 10th anniversary of selling online in 2/2/12

I made my first sale online selling a Marriage Fitness program on my website (http://www.imhappyfish.com) 2 years ago after my divorce. I personally had a lot of help and self improvement from this program, so I set up my own website to sell it, I drive traffic to my website by blogging, and my first sales gave me a $130 check, that's nice and I'm still doing it today, but had not blog for a while and the ranking drop from 200,000+ to 11million+, too bad x( think it's time to pick up and earn and again ....

I do not think the gurus or anyone else should give away their programs for free unless they want to. If you just give someone a course they usually will not value it and take action. Actually the problem with most internet marketing courses is not the course. 99% of the purchasers simply do not take action or try for one day and give up. I find that most IM products may not live up to all the hype but I usually can find one or two techniques which are worth the price of the course.

Before you purchase a course you have to commit to really applying the techniques and even modifying them to suit you. There is not one recipe for everyone.

Most people want to hear that they can make money 15 minutes from now without working or thinking etc. Well the truth is internet marketing takes a lot of work and as you can see from everyone here PERSISTENCE.

Most of us, including myself, have failed over and over before finding some success. Hang in there and keep plugging. It is possible to succeed and you do not need a guru. Be your own guru.

Hi Mat,

Well after about 8 months I finally sold something. This has been hard work and I am still wondering how people do it.
I finally sold some tickets to the soccer world cup, from one of my sites.
The excitement after doing this has given me a bit of hope.I am still hoping to be able to make a living from this. One of my sites has been on the first page of Google and Yahoo for the search term cheapest travel booking, the search volume for that is in the millions, but I have not had any traffic ?
So now i am a bit confused and not sure what to do. Does anyone have any advice ? here is the site address http://www.cheapesttravelbooking.com

If I had traffic on that site and I was not making any sales, I would know that there is something wrong with the site layout or text. But I have had no traffic to this site and it is on the first page of most search engines.

This is a relatively new site though, but I am on the first page and I have no traffic ?

I have about 20 active sites that cover a wide range of products. I have Clickbank & Commission junction products, they all seem like great products to me, but I am having a difficult time trying to pay my bills.

I have sold 3 products through Clickbank and 1 through CJ, but have not been paid anything yet as the commission that they owe me is to small.

First sales are great but how do you live on one sale ?

I think the net has huge potential and will continue to try and make this work.

Thanks

Gary

I see that you have no autoresponder on your site. You should have your own travel newsletter which follows up with your visitors automatically and you should start building a database of targeted prospects. The money is in the list. See http://www.quickregister.net/autoresponders.html
for info on autoresponder. How about starting your own targeted travel forum? How about doing some basic travel videos and submitting them to all the video directories with your url in the description area?

Hi Mat,

Thanks for the advice, but according to my stats I have no visitors,
The search volume for the term cheapest travel booking looks to me rather large. But my site which is on the first page is getting no visits.

So if I was getting a bit of traffic and no sales, then I know that it is the site.
But being on the first page and not getting any clicks ?

Hello everyone...and hello Matt and Thank-you
for inviting me to post this reply
My first sale was yesterday for a whopping 3.83. Funny thing about it was,I have been a member of the free ad forum, for some time now,but had never read Matts post about 1st sale until, the day before yesterday, but could"nt talk about it because I had not made a sale yet. Then walla a sale. Another funny thing about it was,it was a referral, and I hav"nt ever promoted this site, and it was one of my 1st affiliate links I got approx 1 year ago. Imagine that. I was re-organizing my 3 notebooks with all my affiliate links, and I was unable to log into my acct, that I set up a year ago,and sent them an e-mail to find out why, because my user name and password was correct according to my records, and the next thing I know is an e-mail,that said Congratulation...you just made a commission. I almost deleted it,because I get that exact subject line often. At 1st I was opening them and it was pissing me off cause when I opened them the 1st line would always be-How would you like to see this--Bla,Bla, Bla.... Actually I did make 1 other sale in June for 2.14 thru 1 of my websites in June, but I knew I was getting that one
I had GoDaddy on my site and set up a domain for a friend of mine...Comm 2.14 Anyway Thanks again Matt Myers talk again soon Sincerely Rob Hairston gentleiron2@yahoo.com

Well it was actually over the phone but it was from leads I bought online.

About 5 years ago, I became a Prepaid Legal Associate and bought some leads from Gateway Leads; actually I did this many times. Anyway, at first I only bought 5 leads and I signed up two people. I guess this is pretty good for your first time using online leads so it was really exciting. It was fun a few days later to see my account credited and to actually get the money! When I became a director it was more fun of course because I'm dealing with more money now but I'll never forget the first time. It was a blast.

I have to say that I'm not really sure. At that point in time, I was just happy to sell anything. I believe it was a program that really was a scam, and I didn't know it. I was using safelists, because it was the only place I could afford. I had no cash. I was literally broke and barely could afford the phone line and internet access.

But I didn't really understand what I sold. Those days are long gone, but that sale did, in fact, give me the spur of hope that kept my drive to succeed online moving endlessly.

Of course, I finally found a way to generate income, and do much better today.

But those days on the safelists were really something.

Hey Everyone:D
My first on-line sale was through Ebay. Not my first attempt at Ebay, but my second, after getting some positive feedback. It was one of my 8x10 framed hand painted pictures. It sold for $25. Mike, I think that is a great lesson in persistence. Most people would have completely given up after one year. Most give up after one day. This shows what I have always believed that persistence is the number 1 quality needed for success in internet marketing. Thanks. Matt.

Boy, do I agree with that. I have persevered for about 3 years, placing adds and promoting my website all over the internet, and for free I might add, and the benefits DO come. When my business name or just my name is Googled up, I am on the first page! I am making sales because of all the hard work and THANK - YOU FREE ADD FORUM for helping me to make it possible!

My products are priceless (http://www.kriyayoga.com/english/download.htm) therefore I never sell anything at all and still earn a honest living.

My web site - the Cyberspace Ashram for Kriya Yoga, God and Love (http://www.kriyayoga.com/) is 13 years old in April this year. I never attempted to sell anything at all. All services for free to all world. The main product is available as download or on DVD Spiritual Treasures (http://www.kriyayoga.com/newsletters/minicd.html). Both on honest donation basis Last year some 7.7 million unique visitors to my site running on 4 servers. All that is available on donation basis also is in FULL for free online.

I have a solid revenue from happy users making a "honest" donation for services received or products received ... combined with a fully optimized Google AdSense system that all allows me to have plenty of revenue for a honest life, a sold year round charity project and to continuously invest into improvements.

I follow an old saying:

"when you stop running after the money, the money runs after you"

God's blessings do all the rest for me - day by day every moment of each day.

My one and only sale on line was for a Linux installer for PS3. I advertised on US Free Ads. I still haven't been paid though as it's my only sale through Clickbank and I need 4 more sales to be paid. It's my only sale in 3 years. It gave me a huge boost at the time and confidence to continue. I still haven't found the magic formula to success! http://mystuffedteddy.com

Let’s see, I started making money a little over 14 years ago with a company called International Teamwork’s Inc (ITI). We marketed long distance which at that time was before free long distance plan and cell phones. We marketed for TTI National (a sub of MCI WorldCom) and we all know what happened with that. None the less I was excited with the money I made, and I was hooked!

I then went to SFI, and quickly moved onto other things.

Here I am now 14 years later still taking in my share of the Internet World and I love every minute. I have met some really good people and long time friends.

My advise is to pick ONE or TWO (no more than that because then you can't stay focused), and stick with it.

Make a capture page like this:
Capture Page (http://www.f5m-millionaires-club.com/freereport/?id=earnnetwealth) and capture all your leads.
You can build one for FREE Here:
Squeeze Page (http://www.instantsqueezepagegenerator.com/index.php?rid=16652)

Test the waters and see what pulls. Just don't give up and tune out the Nay Sayers.
Think positive and you will have positive outcomes, just keep at it.

Hope this helps someone.

Well said Matt!

Like I said, I have been around Internet Marketing for 14 years, and I have seen many programs come and go.
I have lost a LOT of money, but then again I have made my share too.

I am far from a rich person, but I can say that I am in my second custom built home, and everything in it is paid for. Both my truck and wifes car are also paid for.
When I started Internet Marketing, I was working 50-60 hours a week. I don't do that much anymore, but I still work very hard. Most people want it handed to them without any effort, and when they don't see the results from doing nothing they call it a scam.

Granted, there are many scams out there, but there are also a lot of good programs too, and when worked, they will result in a huge pay off.

Hey Matt,

My first sale was $ 1.50 and it was for the Multi-Submitter on my safelist.
The name of my safelist is EVERYONES Safelist. I am the owner operator.
This first sale was incredible because it made me more persistent and gave me a definte purpose.:)

My first money earned online was from PTC sites. It came after so many scams, and so much time spent clicking, I almost lost interest in internet at all.

When I received my first $1.03 I couldn't believe it.

Then I started to learn how to make money online, I'm still learning and there is still a lot to learn.

Now I have sales from my site, not to get rich over night, but not bad at all.

Using Craigslist to promote an information product.

I have a downloadable ebook titled 'The Craigslist Traffic Guide (http://craigslisttraffic.com/?e=vantagemediainc)'.

This $7 guide is for affiliate marketers wanting to tap into the 9th most visited site on the Internet and will:

>> Clear away all the fog about how others are making $$$ daily

>> Assist you in creating your own money systems.

>> Give you all the real info tips and tricks that usually are sold for $100's if not $1000's by others.

>> Get you up and running in no time.

>> Make your life so much more easier having this handy on your desk.

It is a straight to the point resource that will show you everything you need to know about Craigslist.

To date 25 copies of The Craigslist Traffic Guide (http://craigslisttraffic.com/?e=vantagemediainc) have been downloaded in the same amount of days.

Some where in the 90's or at the inception I as many others at that time were signing up for a free site called Free Yellow and I made my first website.
I picked up a business opp! which was selling virtual systems. I advertised on some free classifieds and made some sales. How different between then and now. I wish I knew then what I know now.

Today I make sales by articles, some free ads, Groups, twitter, facebook, forums, email, paid ads, etc.
Today the Market is very competitive and you really have to work it. However I enjoy it. I just made two new sites and am working on those to get ranked. My favorite site I run is is http://colorsofhonor.blogspot.com and the two I just created.

Have a great day people

I made my first commission of $72.69, which I didn't receive yet, on Dec.22,2009. It was 5 months after I published my website. I used many advertizing methods, such as PPC as well as classifieds in many areas and writing articles. However, I truly don't know which method worked best. One thing is certain I will never forget the excitement I felt and the joy of my whole family encouraged me greatly.

My first sell was of my "low rider" design t-shirt. It is still one of my best sellers. You can check it out at the following link:
http://www.zazzle.com/low_rider_tshirt-235947524389001158
I will never foget how excited it made me feel that someone liked the design I put my heart into creating.

I got started designing t-shirts and gift items after I ordered a t-shirt through CafePress. Included in my order was an ad stating that anyone could become a contributor to the CafePress site and they welcome designs from anyone. Well, I couldn't resist this. I love to draw, take pictures and just anything to do with art in general. So, I posted my first design on CafePress. Shortly after that, I discovered Zazzle. You got it, I became a contributor on that site too. I started uploading my original artwork on their site and they helped me with some of the promotion, because they allow users to vote on your designs, join your fan club, etc. I also used free ads on the web and my website (http://attitudegifts.tripod.com) to promote my designs. I have a MySpace page as well which helps to bring attention to my designs. You can take a look at my Zazzle page here: http://www.zazzle.com/attitude_gifts and see what you think of it.

It was a few years ago when I checked my email and got that message that I had made my first sale. I was so excited and all that frustration over continuing to work at building my site had paid off. I haven't looked back since. I enjoy creating my designs and knowing that others find joy in them too. I got a small commision off of the sale of that first tee which sold for $24.95 and I still get a thrill out of each and every sale I make. It is the most rewarding thing for an artist to know that others like the work you do.

My message to all you out there still waiting on that first sale is never give up. Good luck to you all!

What a great topic and some really interesting replies!

I made my first sale online through a Joint Venture my husband set up for me. It was so thrilling ... I'd done all the sales copy on the landing page myself for a product I created myself.

I got an 8% conversion from the click throughs on his list ... unfortunately he had a really poor response from his email so he only ran it twice.

Since then I've had mixed results. Sales come from I'm not sure where ... however I've had some coaching last year and I'm setting up a new opt in and doing some re-arranging of my pages and I'm pretty excited about the new year :)

I've also got a couple of good mail outs to large lists set up as well.

And last year I made a couple of good sales on some affiliate programs I belong to ... It's very exciting watching the bank balance grow.

Cheers,

I sold this to lady and made $23 on the sale, but after she received it she decided that it was not what she wanted.
I helped her through the process of returning it and I guess she was impressed with the ease in which the process went, that she has ordered other things from me since.:rolleyes:p

Hi Astrid. I was wondering if you are using autoresponder on your site. Many people forget that it often it takes repeated exposure to your product before they purchase. Plus if you are building your own list you can market related products and services over and over in the future.

Hello Matt,

My first sale was a Detox Dietary Supplement, It was with pay-per-click on a very low budget and I was not really sure what I was doing with keywords and writing titles & ads.
wow! Very exciting , I remember thinking if I could make sales when I'm not online or even home how can I multiply that to make more money!
Then started learning as much as I could about Keywords , Titles and Ads.
That one sale made me much better at learning about my products.

My first sale online was about 4 months ago, I was an affiliate marketer for an online digital product company, My first and only order online for that company totaled about $63. But now... I get $192 in January 2010. In my country, a huge $ 192 value. That experience actually helped me tremendously. :D

Today I have a digital store. Hopefully I can achieve a decent income from these digital stores.

Internet marketing for Internet businesses, and the businesses themselves, have gone global in their reach. Many companies program their websites with language translations so that anyone anywhere in the world can take advantage of what they are selling. The one I am most interested in telling you about is Carbon Copy Pro, a global marketing business. They are in one hundred and eighty countries and are translated in fifty languages. Their mission is to teach marketing to anyone and everyone that wishes to increase their sales and make more money. The Internet has gotten so enormous that the hit-or-miss way of hoping your message gets exposure is no longer effective, if ever was in the first place.

This is a great question. There are two things I remember very well. My first month in business and my first check. I sold a onsite SEO package and internet marketing in Atlanta. I went to a Chamber of Commerce event in December and left a few business cards. The client saw my website on my business card and check it out. He loved it and I was able to cash a check for $227, check and only check in January. This was back in 2006. I was so afraid that we wasn't going to make it. 4 years later U.S. Image Design is still here, working with company like ServiceMaster Clean, Sign A Rama and just recently McDonald's.

The only reason that money has value is because there are billions of other people that agree with your perception that this million bucks has value. If they didn't agree, you could not spend it for the actual value. This is getting interesting. Because what we have actually established is that value is elsewhere and the only reason money has representational value is because everybody else agrees with you. People all over the world toil daily to get some money. They work in day ***s and take risks of all kinds to get some representational currency of value so they can buy food, shelter and other things.

Selling household and clothing items online was how I made it. Made a quick site and used Affiliate Marketing techniques and tools to promote and sell. You really have to not only have great items but ask why someone will want to buy from you and raise your energy. Return phone calls and emails so people know you are real. It does indeed go a long way as previously mentioned. Pick up and start using your telephone!

Overall there is a lot of free money available to earn using the Internet. Even from the paid review website you could be earning around £5 an hour and this is just one way to earn money online. You can also be earning around £50 a week from paid survey sites, and then around £40 a week from cashback websites recurring clicks. Then you could be earning about £50 a week from paid forum posting, and then about £30 a week from online data entry ***s. Then there's the online arbing, which can earn you an endless amount of money.

Wow that does bring back memories. I started back in the 90s. I always checked out programs very well before I would ever promote them to anyone. I got to know the owner of The Millionaires Club, which was an MLM. I think what really helped me was using a voice conferencing room, which not many people know about back then. I think it is very important to give your prospects several ways to contact you. They want to know who they are working with and if they think they can work with you.

I don't care if you have 5 clients or 5,000. Always be there to help. I want people to call me, or come to my voice/text conference room and get to know me. I know and I understand some people do not feel good about giving out their phone number, but if that is you, get a Google phone number and they can at least leave you a message.

I put-upon the name of the company, which is rarely exploited. Thus, the site got listed in search engines, and I had some calls. I experimented with marketing by e-mail for him, but it did not help sales of tea. I guess I was using the method away from the brand of SEO.
