As a website owner or manager, you’ll improve your search engine rankings by getting more backlinks to your website. Backlinks are links back to your website from other websites. Follow these steps to get backlinks for a website.

1.Submit your website to directories. Many website directories are free and quick to sign up and add your website for an immediate backlink (see Resources below).

2.Market your website through articles. Article marketing is a free way to generate traffic and one way backlinks.

3.Trade links with related websites. Search online for complimentary (not competitor) websites and email the webmaster to offer a mutually beneficial, reciprocal link exchange.

4.Add your website to multiple bookmarking and social networking websites. It’s simple and takes a few minutes to sign up for websites where you can bookmark your favorite websites including your own, for immediate backlinks. Try Squidoo, Digg, Stumbleupon and Technorati (see Resources below).

5.Post ads on classified sites like Craigslist.org and USFreeAds.com (see Resources below). Craigslist is free and takes a few minutes to post an ad in the small business section for your city.

6.Write and distribute online press releases. PR is a highly effective way to market a business. Online press releases will also generate more backlinks to your website for improved search engine rankings and more traffic.

The only quick way to get a high page rank is to spend a ton of money on design, original content and a sound marketing program.

Most of us don't have much, if any of the above, so we have to slog it out.

Time can help you get PR. If you are still around after 5 yrs. the SE figure you are serious. Hello?

SEO certainly starts you on the right track.
Patience is required. Internet marketing is not a quick fix for any economical situation regardless of what programs or people keep flogging.

I believe that PR is overly admired and sought. It doesn't really help you make money, excepting for maybe a bit more traffic. If the traffic isn't targeted even that extra traffic doesn't help.

To make money on the Internet you have to find Programs that are well established, have real testimonials and are initially free. Yep - free, as they are confident in their programs and sucess. As you work with them you will see what they can do for you. Until that time keep your hand out of your back pocket (wallet). By the way, there are some good programs available.

Hope this helps
