Fitness and nutrition have been a lifelong endeavor for me, and I've had very direct experience in changing my eating habits and the result was that I bypassed developing diabetes and lost 50 pounds as well.

Anyone with a family history of severe illness, especially diabetes - which you CAN avoid - should spend some time researching nutrition and making better choices.
