MEANING:
Colds are most infectious during the first 2 to 4 days after symptoms appear, and may be contagious for up to 3 weeks. Your can catch a cold from person-to-person contact or by breathing in virus particles that are spread through the air by sneezing or coughing. Touching the mouth or nose after touching skin or another surface contaminated with a rhinovirus can also spread a cold. Over a hundred viruses can cause the common cold. Major offenders include rhinoviruses, coronaviruses, myxoviruses, adenoviruses, coxsackieviruses, and echo-viruses.
DEFINITION
The common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory system. The upper respiratory system includes the nose, throat, sinuses, Eustachian (pronounced yoo-STA-shuhn) tubes, trachea (pronounced TRAY-kee-uh), larynx, and bronchial tubes. More than two hundred different viruses can cause a cold. A group of viruses known as the rhinoviruses, however, causes about 30 to 50 percent of all colds. Almost all colds clear up in less than two weeks without complications.
SIGNS AND SYMTOMS OF COLD:
Colds are sometimes called rhinovirus or coronavirus (pronounced kuh-RO-nuh-vie-russ) infections. They are the most common infections to affect any part of the body. Experts estimate that the average person has more than fifty colds during a lifetimeCold symptoms usually appear 2 or 3 days after exposure to a source of infection. Most colds clear up within 1 week, but some last for as long as 2 weeks. The symptoms of a cold are:
*A tickle in the throat
*A runny or stuffy nose
*Sneezing
*Sore throat
* Cough
* Headache
*Mild fever
* Fatigue
* Muscle aches
*Loss of appetite.
STEPS TO STOP COLD:
Cold symptoms can also be relieved by some simple self-care steps. These include:
*Drinking plenty of fluids, but avoiding acidic juices (such as g****fruit juice) that may irritate the throat
*Gargling with warm salt water for a sore throat
*Not smoking
*Getting plenty of rest
*Using a cool-mist room humidifier to ease congestion and sore throat
*Rubbing a lubricant such as Vaseline under the nose to prevent irritation from frequent nose-blowing
*Removing mucus from the nose of infants who are too young to blow their noses. Infant nasal aspirators are available for this purpose
*Washing hands well and frequently, especially after touching the nose or before handling food.
*Covering the mouth and nose when sneezing.
*Disposing of used tissues properly.
*Avoiding close contact with anyone who has a cold during the first two to four days after infection.
*Not sharing food, eating utensils, or cups with anyone.
*Avoiding crowded places where cold germs can spread.
*Eating a healthy diet and getting adequate sleep.
USEFUL HERBS IN THE TREATMENT OF COMMON COLDS:
Bishop's Weed (Trachyspermum ammi):
Bishop's weed has the power to open up clogged nasal passages. Its seeds are tied in a cloth and inhaled directly to clear congestions. It is very effective in treating nasal blockages in children.
Cassia (Cassis fistula):
Cassia roots are effective in treating cold. The roots are burnt and the smoke from them is inhaled. The mucus discharge will increase after such a treatment, but within a while it will stop completely.
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum):
Cinnamon reduces the sore throat problems and also prevents the cold from becoming chronic, or developing into something serious like pneumonia or influenza. Cinnamon is boiled in a glass of water with a pinch of pepper and honey.
Cumin seeds (Cuminum cyminum):
Cumin seeds are antiseptic. It is also helpful in treating the throat irritations.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale):
It is an excellent remedy for treating coughs that accompany common colds. Ginger tea is also very effective in treating colds.
Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) :
It is a good remedy for sore throat problems. An extract of the leaves boiled in water can be used as a drink for the same benefits.
Onion (Allium cepa):
Onion has the power to liquefy the phlegm. This makes the sticky mucus runny and it is discharged out of the nose.
Dietary Treatments for Common Colds:
Common cold patients are typically advised to fast for one day so that the body toxins wash out. Hot foods are advisable when we have a common cold. Hot chicken soup and hot vegetable soup are the traditionally known remedy for common cold.

Glutathione is emerging as one of the keys to the health puzzle. It was the discovery of glutathione’s importance in optimizing your body’s first line of defense – your immune system – that led to the development of Immunocal.

The Master Antioxidant (AID)
Antioxidants participate directly in the destruction of reactive oxygen compounds called free radicals. These by-products of a cell’s normal function can’t be avoided, but exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or other sources promotes their emergence. Free radicals have been linked to muscle fatigue during exercise and aging.

For this reason, the body is equipped with a variety of antioxidants. Vitamins C and E are natural antioxidants but do not occur naturally in the body. These and other antioxidants actually depend on glutathione to function properly, which is why glutathione is called “the Master Antioxidant”.

Food for the Immune System (AID)
Glutathione helps build your immune system’s resistance and improve your chances of staying healthy.

Lymphocytes are cells of your immune system. Glutathione is essential for lymphocytes to increase in number, produce antibodies, and function efficiently.

A Natural Detoxifier (AID)
Our food and water sources are becoming increasingly contaminated with chemicals, as is the air that we breathe. Supplemental detoxifiers such as glutathione help to counter the effects of the toxins we inhale and ingest.

By physically binding to toxic compounds in cells, glutathione helps make them soluble - and harmless. The body can then eliminate these disarmed toxins in the bile and urine.
