NAIL BITING
MEANING:
Nail biting is the habit of biting fingernails during periods of nervousness, stress and hunger. It can also be a sign of mental or emotional disorder. Nail biting, or onychophagia, can lead to many problems, including bacterial infections, permanently deformed nails and dental problems. Reasons for biting vary from person to person, but the habit is prevalent in today's society.
EFFECTS OF NAIL BITING:
Nail biting leads to nail proplems, mouth proplems, and nail infections.
NAIL PROBLEMS :180px-Nail_biter.jpg
These can also be caused by:
*An injury to a nail.
*Hangnails, which may lead to a minor infection next to your nails (paronychia), causing the skin around the nails to become swollen and tender.
*Nail-biting, this can lead to fingertips that are red and sore and cuticles that bleed. Nail-biting also increases the risk of bacterial infections around your nail beds and in your mouth. Nail-biting can also cause dental problems and infections of the gums.
MOUTH PROPLEM:
A mouth problem can involve your gums, lips, tongue, inner cheeks, the roof of your mouth (soft and hard palates), under your tongue, your neck, or teeth.
FUNGAL NAIL INFECTION:n2.jpg
Fungal nail infection (onychomycosis, or ringworm of the nail) occurs when fungi invade a fingernail or toenail and/or the skin underneath the nail (nail bed).Fungal nail infections can cause a nail to crack or thicken, become discolored, streaked, or spotted. As a fungal infection progresses, the nail can become unsightly.
TREATMENT FOR NAIL BITING:
In both *****s and children, nail biting is a common habit, sometimes stemming from insecurity, boredom, anxiety or excitement. Excessive nail biting results in very weak nails and, in extreme cases, damaged fingers caused by chewing the nail down to the quick — the sensitive skin beneath the nail.
There is no known cure for nail biting. However, it has been suggested that it may be easier to cure nail biting related to a psychiatric problem than to break one that is a habit. The following treatments help to get cure from nail biting. These include:
SELF CONTROL:
This is one of the treatments of nail biting. Self control begins with awareness. To help in his awareness, the nail biter is required to observe and keep a written record of the frequency of his nail biting episodes. Identify and eliminate activities leading to nail biting sessions such as fidgeting and restless fingers.
AVERSION:
Various forms of aversion therapy exist to help people stop biting their nails. These include methods such as coating the nails with a bad-tasting substance (sometimes in the form of a special nail polish, tabasco sauce, or gel deodorant) or wearing a rubber band on their wrist and having friends and family members snap it (or tell the nailbiter to snap it) when they see nailbiting. Replacing the habit of biting nails by the habit of chewing gum works for some people
RESPONSE COMPETITION:
This technique requires the nail biter to do some physical action whenever he gets the urge to bite his nails. For instance, he can be taught to engage himself in drawing, writing, or some other convenient activity or simply put his hands by his side.
HABIT REVERSAL:
The most effective technique is to draw up a step-by-step programme to make the individual aware of his habit and then to provide a competing response to interfere with the habit. This would mean combining record keeping, relaxation training (e.g. yoga), and response competition.
