MEANING OF ONION:
Onion is the most valuable herbal remedy for common illness.The onion, a pungent edible of the lily family, is one of the oldest cultivated vegetables. It is considered a food of exceptional value for flavouring and seasoning.

The onion is a biennial herb, usually grown as an annual. All its parts produce a strong onion odour when crushed. It has superficial root system, a very short flattened stem at the base of the plant, which increases in diameter as growth continues. Leaves are long, linear and hollow. A bulb is formed by thickening of the leaf bases when the plant reaches a certain stage of growth. The fruit is a globular capsule.

Storage onions are low in water and high in sulfur, so they store well and are available year-round. Sweet onions are usually available just from April to August. Storage onions are more pungent and flavorful than sweet onions, and they're best if cooked before eating.

Sweet onion is a variety of dry onion that is not pungent. There are several varieties of sweet onion. Although all onions have sugar sweet onions have a very low sulfur content as compared to typical onions. Onions are noted for their easily assimilable iron content. They are, therefore, beneficial in the treatment of anemia.
HEART DISEASES:
The onion are very valuable in heart diseases as they correct thrombosis and also reduce blood cholesterol.
SKIN PROPLEMS:
Onion is a well known remedy for skin proplems. Onion stimulates the circulation of blood in the mucous membrane. Warts also sometimes disappear if rubbed with cut onions. Roasted or otherwise, onions are applied as a poultice to boils, bruises, wounds, etc., to bring the boils to maturity by its heaty sensation.
EAR DISORDERS:
Onion juice dipped on cotton wool and put into the car is a popular Russian remedy for ringing sound in the ears. Dropped hot in the ear, it relieves earache.
CHOLERA :
Onion is an effective remedy for cholera. About 30 grams of onion and seven black peppers should be finely pounded in a pestle and given to the patient of cholera. It allays thirst and restlessness and the patient feels better
URINARY SYSTEM DISORDERS :
Onions are highly beneficial in the treatment of urinary system disorders. For burning sensation in urine, six grams of onion should be boiled in 500 ml. of water. It should be removed from the fire when half the water has evaporated. It should then be strained, allowed to cool and given to the patient as a drink. It will relieve the burning sensation in urine. Onion rubbed in water and mixed with 60 grams of sugar will be useful in retention of urine; It will bring about free urination within a short time.
COUGH:
Cough is a rapid expulsion of air from the lungs typically in order to clear the lung airways of fluids, mucus, or material. Cough is also called tussis.The use of raw onion is valuable in a cough. This vegetable should be chopped fine and the juice extracted from it. One teaspoon of the juice should then be mixed with one teaspoon of honey and kept for four or five hours-it will make an excellent cough syrup and should be taken twice daily.
SINUSITIS:
Sinusitis is a disease which is caused by an inflammation (swelling, redness, and pain) in the lining of the sinuses.
Garlic and onion are the popular herbs for sinusitis. The use of pungent foods like garlic and onion is one of the most effective remedies for sinus problems. One should begin with small mild doses and increase them gradually. Beneficial results can also be achieved by adding these herbs in moderate amounts to regular meals.
