A standard 3-way stopcock is a device with three ports that is used in intravenous therapy to control the direction in which fluids are flowing. It is used in the administration of multiple medications through a single IV line, in obtaining blood samples without interfering with the IV drip, in the administration of a contrasting agent in imaging procedures, and in the measurement of central venous pressure. Its rotating handle is used to rotate the fluids between any two ports, leaving the other port closed.
