An ultrasound scan is a safe and non-invasive imaging technique. It uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of organs and tissues inside the body. Unlike other x-ray techniques, ultrasound uses no radiation and, thus, carries no risk. This makes it a suitable imaging modality to view a developing fetus during pregnancy.
Ultrasound probes use a transducer, a handheld device, which produces sound waves that have frequencies above the threshold of human hearing (above 20KHz). In the case of diagnostic ultrasound, probes are placed on the skin; however, in some cases, probes may be placed inside the body like vagina, the gastrointestinal tract, etc. Ultrasound scans are commonly used to examine the heart, kidneys, thyroid, gallbladder, and female reproductive system.
How do I prepare for the procedure?
Prior to the test, inform the doctor about any medicines supplements or blood thinners you are taking. Your doctor will inform you which medicines to stop before the scan.
Ultrasound price will vary depending on your location and the type of diagnostic centre.
The patient is required to change into a hospital gown and lie on a bed. An ultrasound technologist will apply a special lubricating gel to the skin. This prevents friction when the transducer glides on the skin. Through this transducer, the technologist is able to obtain images for the radiologist to view and report.
When the technologist finishes the scan, the gel is removed from the body. The entire procedure is over in less than 30 minutes.
Those living in Delhi-NCR or Mumbai can know the ultrasound scan price by doing an online search and finding out the best diagnostic centres.
