Root planing is a deep-cleaning dental procedure used to treat gum disease, particularly periodontitis.
Purpose
Removes plaque, tartar (calculus), and bacterial toxins from the roots of teeth below the gumline.
Smooths the tooth root surface so gums can reattach and heal.
Helps stop gum disease from progressing and prevents tooth loss.
How it’s done
Local anesthesia is usually given to numb the gums and teeth.
The dentist or periodontist uses special instruments (manual scalers or ultrasonic devices) to clean the root surfaces.
The roots are smoothed to make it harder for bacteria to reattach.
Sometimes combined with scaling, which cleans above the gumline.
When it’s needed
Persistent gum inflammation or bleeding.
Deep periodontal pockets (usually over 4 mm).
Bone loss seen on dental X-rays due to gum disease.
Aftercare
Temporary gum tenderness or sensitivity.
Good oral hygiene at home (brushing, flossing).
