Alagappa University is a public university established as a unitary institution in 1985 by an Act of the Tamil Nadu Legislature. Then, in 2002, it became a cooperative type. The university is located in Karaikudi in the Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu.

Alagappa University was established by a special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in May 1985 with the objective of promoting research, development, and dissemination of knowledge in various academic fields. Alagappa University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.
