Definition of Elbows:
Usually at 45° or 90°, an elbow is a pipe fitting that redirects fluid flow. Most process applications call for long radius elbows, whose centreline radius is 1.5 times the nominal pipe diameter. With a lower pressure drop and less turbulence than a short radius elbow of the same size, they let fluid flow change direction slowly. In limited areas when the smaller geometry is required in spite of the greater pressure drop, short radius elbows —where the centerline radius equals the nominal pipe diameter— are utilized.

Directly from the wall of the main pipe, an outlet — or an outlet fitting— creates a branch connection without need for a full tee fitting. Olets' geometry spreads the stress of the branch opening throughout a greater area of the main pipe wall, therefore doing away with the need in most circumstances for a separate reinforcement pad.
