Nursing home abuse happens when a resident is harmed because of mistreatment, neglect, poor supervision, or unsafe conditions. Abuse can take many forms. It may be physical, emotional, sexual, financial, or medical. Neglect can also be serious, especially when residents do not receive proper food, water, medication, hygiene, mobility assistance, or basic attention. In New York City, nursing homes care for many residents with complex needs. Some residents live with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, limited mobility, chronic pain, or serious medical conditions. Others may have difficulty speaking clearly or explaining what happened to them. These challenges can make elderly residents more vulnerable to abuse and neglect. A nursing home has a duty to protect residents and provide proper care. When staff members or facility owners fail to meet that responsibility, families have the right to ask questions and seek accountability.
