Yes, United Airlines apologized after a dog died in an overhead compartment by sending an email and providing an apology statement by saying, "A tragic accident that should never have occurred, as a pet should never be placed in an overhead bin." They also provide United Airlines Dog Death Compensation for their fault and say it was a tragic accident that was investigated by them to find the culprit.
